Trying out the tumblr iPhone app. Was hoping to start a novelty blog using it but I guess I have to go to the web site for that.

Suppose you want to write a Launchd agent in Python that communicates using UNIX domain sockets. There’s no sample code for that, but the information is out there to figure out how (especially…

How BibDesk generates Apple Help and a web manual →
This is something that had been on my old blog in 2006 and went away, so I’m reposting something I wrote to the macsb list a few years ago: For the BibDesk open source project, we wanted to have…
Tinkering in the Sideshow →
Last week, Alex Payne and Mark Pilgrim both made some heartfelt arguments explaining why they think the fact that Apple’s vision of the computing future as a relatively closed appliance is…

…I’m pretty close to giving up on Mr. Obama, who seems determined to confirm...
– Paul Krugman (via azspot) (via marco)
I agree, and I think anyone who also feels this way should probably take a look at Lawrence Lessig’s 8 minute presentation on why Obama is so hamstrung:
Lessig on Obama’s First Year: Change Congress Chronicles
So I’ve been using @textexpander a lot but building a database of good snippets is hard. Is there a good common abbreviation starter db?

Wait, it just hit me - the high-volume @lettersapp lists should totally be a Wave, amirite?
for my sanity and employment’s sake, trying radio silence on @lettersapp dev list until end of work day.
wondering where Avatar box office ranks when adjusted for inflation? A: 36th. http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm
based on observation of 1 day’s traffic on @emailinit list
My estimate: N people are talking about an email client -> there will be ~ log2(N) crucial features that divide the group into large subsets
and those subsets will not overlap well
Archives of @emailinit list frustrating to read in browser due to word wrapping. Seems like a part of the call to arms for some reason
Just played w/seasonality. Pretty nice - not sure how to get it to show last year’s data tho, and I want to compare cities on the same plots
Is there a well-designed weather web site? Weather.com and accuweather are kind of sad
weatherbug, intellicast, and MSN weather - no good
weather.cnn.com - not bad. first one that looks like it was designed in the modern web era
weather.yahoo is just weather.com reskinned. wunderground.com is also not great
Just set my HN minaway timeout to 43,200. That ought to do it.
Sharing code with only one other person, I’ve managed to fall into about ring 2 of version control hell.
Just deveined some shrimp. No longer want to have shrimp for dinner. Craving soyrizo. Maybe with some chreese.
Shrimp turned out great, mostly due to total control of home-made cocktail sauce (so easy: ketchup, horseradish, tabasco, lemon, done!)

~30 minutes work for a travel expense report. That’s making good time - about 2.5 minutes per receipt.
Anyone have an opinion on textexpander vs. typeit4me? Point me to good comparisons?

9 days late thanks to instapaper, I’m thinking of famous city icons, inspired by this muledesign post from @mike_FTW : http://bit.ly/4xGHso
New York - Empire State Bldg. / OK, now I’ve run out. Did I miss any?
New Orleans - Superdome / Hong Kong - Bank Tower / Florence - Duomo / Moscow - Kremlin / Beijing - Forbidden City
Any number of things in DC: Wash. monument, Pentagon, Capitol, White House, etc

more #cityicons : Tokyo - Mt. Fuji / Berlin - Brandenburg Gate / Vatican City - St. Peter’s
I’m totally with @al3x about tech news. Last few weeks, I check HN and nothing interests me.
RT @mkhl: @mikemccracken Can’t you also hit C-d “inside” C-x C-f to get to dired? (why, yes you can)
emacs tip: if using ido, set ‘show dot for dired’ and ‘enable flex matching’. Not being able to get dired from C-x C-f was annoying.
finally changed my cell number to Texas. Now to work on saying “Y’all”
New #BibDesk release v1.4 - congrats to the team! http://bibdesk.sf.net/ or see Adam G’s post at http://shiftingbalance.org/?p=160 for notes
I actually contributed to #BibDesk 1.4 - I wrote the IEEE Xplore web group parser.
Failing to get citation microformat defined: many months. Giving up and html-scraping: a few weeks. #bibdesk
I really can’t stop listening to Phoenix. Is there a cure for this?
SOMETIMES MY WIFE YELLS IN EMAILS. THIS IS FUNNY WHEN IT’S ABOUT DOG PUKE. APPARENTLY THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE VITAMIN BOTTLE HAS RETURNED.
